Good to know
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Buenos Aires is the capital of the Republic of Argentina.
On an area of 202 square kilometres there live about three
million people. Nevertheless together with the suburbs the
population of Buenos Aires sums up to 10 million of inhabitants
which renders Buenos Aires one of the most populated cities
in the world.
It was always considered as a city with a major cultural movement.
Among the museums there are the Museum of Art, of Modern Art,
of Oriental Art, of the life of the Gaucho, the Evita Perón
Museum.
Across the Río de la Plata lies Uruguay.
The Río de la Plata and the Riachuelo are the natural
borders in the east and south of the city. The limits to the
west and north are given by the circular Avenue General Paz.
Climate
The weather in Buenos Aires is mild during all seasons of
the year.
The average annual temperatures are around 18ºC except
some very hot days in summer and a few cold days in winter.
The Summer is very humid and hot with 28 ºC on average.
Culture
Buenos Aires was always considered a centre of cultural life.
The museums, cinemas and theatres offer an almost unlimited
variety of activities. The range of cultural options includes
every age and tendency, how strange they could ever be.
Cafés and Bars
For the Porteños, as the inhabitants of Buenos Aires
are called, the cafés and bars are their second home.
There are many songs and poems dedicated to a special café
or bar (e.g. "El viejo Toroni") describing the strange
relationship between place and human being.
Even nowadays people love to stay in a café.
They spend their time reading, talking, or watching others
read or talk. It is the preferred place to meet, chat with
friends, watch TV or pass your time looking out of the window.
In the last few years the number of new bars and cafés
seems to flood certain districts, like "Palermo Hollywood",
with people. Concerts, theatre plays, book shows are taking
place there and much more.
Nevertheless the most traditional places are still well-frequented
by the people. Some of the oldest ones are "Tortoni"
and the "36 Billares", an old-fashioned hall of
games (pool, cards, chess), in the Avenida de Mayo; "La
Giralda" in the Avenida Corrientes; "El Británico",
near the Lezama Park; "Las Violetas", a traditional
and renovated Confíteria for pastries, in the Avenida
Medrano, "La Ideal", a traditional, not renovated
Confíteria in the Calle Suipacha, "La Biela"
in Recoleta (quarter of Buenos Aires).
